Hey, I’m Elaine, affectionately called “Laine”, “Lainey”, “E”, or “dumbass slut” by my friends when I flirt with the cute girl at the counter. I was born in Virginia but grew up in Southern California and have now relocated to Northern California for college. I’m first-generation Taiwanese, so I identify as an American while remaining aware of my cultural roots. I’m an atheist, a liberal, and happily pansexual, which means that gender has never determined my romantic interests. I would describe myself as talkative, silly, artistic, friendly, cheerful, and paranoid. I laugh a little bit too much and definitely have an intense Peter Pan complex.
I used to be pretty awful in social situations involving strangers, but I’ve grown a lot in the past year and have put a lot of my insecurities behind me. I used to just have a big circle of really close friends, but I feel like my life is now overflowing with friends. It’s really great. I used to be a total introvert and love spending time by myself, but after my meltdown last summer, I’ve decided to start over new for my sophomore year. It’s been…really, really successful, and I have to say that I’m really proud of myself for how far I’ve come.
Last summer, my boyfriend and I had a pretty complicated and traumatic breakup. I’ve been single for almost a year now, and I must admit that I’m definitely enjoying it. We’re on an indefinite break of sorts but mostly we’re just keeping our minds open and are going to see how the future pans out. I can be pretty cynical about long-term relationships and lifetime commitment, but Mark definitely changed my mind about a lot of things. That’s why he’s special. But seriously? Whatever happens happens! No use mourning; I have better things to do with my life than be anything but happy at all times.
Currently, I’m attending UC Berkeley as a prospective English and Media Studies double major. I aspire to work as an editor at a fiction publishing company, but who knows what’ll happen? I’ll just have to wait and see what life has in store for me — and embrace it!
